I don't think that everyone is uncomfortable because with the gap the status quo can stay the same. The powers that be has no concerns with the reasons for the gap because it helps to enforce their bottomline. We as parents, grandparents and actually the nation should be very concerned and very uncomfortable.
If the gap is allowed to become bigger and the disparity continues to be so obvious then we are in a world of trouble. If educators would accept the fact that they are not seen as strictly educators, but proudly wear the hats that they are dealt and work hand in hand with human service agencies there would be a clearer understanding of what they are dealing with.
When you know what you are dealing with it is easier to address it. Knowing what is happening at home and not judging the child's action alone would give the teacher better leverage in the classroom. I love teachers and I think most of them do a great job. Sometimes their hands are tied and they are not empowered to be what they are needed to be.
School should be a village where all adults there would step up and be a part of the solution and not just get a paycheck. Being involved in a human beings life and particularly a child means giving, accepting, understanding and caring. You have to keep your eye on the prize which will be making a real difference in the life of someone.
